Job Description


Financial Modeler
6 Months.
£160-180 per day. Inside IR35.
Edinburgh. Due to the current circumstances, working from home is required. However, when restrictions are removed or suitably eased, your normal office location will apply


As Financial modeller you will be directly responsible for key deliverables and will report to the Head of Finance. You will work closely with the finance leadership team and senior managers providing value to RoS through the provision of appropriate financial information to support strategic decision making. You will take a proactive role in developing, reviewing, improving, updating, building and documenting financial modelling processes including income, costs, work-in-progress, pay and capital. You will also assist the HoF to review and deliver continuous improvement with the support provided by the finance business partnering team to business areas and transfer modelling knowledge, best practice and guidance to other finance colleagues.
The post holder will be self-motivated, numerate, and willing to take the initiative to design new solutions to complex problems and working processes, they will be able to deal with sensitive issues in a confidential manner and a team player with the ability to work independently.

Assist with the following financial modelling tasks:

  • Review and improve the monthly and quarterly budget monitoring and reporting pack
  • Review and improve the unit cost and work in progress modelling
  • Work with colleagues across the business to identify and monitor the income and costs associated with the arrear
  • Review and improve the methodology for overhead apportionment and allocation
  • Review and improve the modelling that underpins key projects in RoS that are used to support business case submissions
  • Review and improve the income modelling including average fee forecasting
  • Review and improve the pay modelling
  • Support the work being done on strategic workforce planning across RoS
  • Review the tracking of capital spend and capitalised staff costs
  • Support financial modelling for governance groups
  • Support return on investment calculations for possible new income streams/activities
  • Support spending review task
  • Support the financial modelling of the corporate plan
  • Support a review of income streams to ensure pricing is set correctly to recover costs
  • Support a review and improve the budget setting process (the five-year Corporate Plan, spending reviews and quarterly budget reviews)
  • Provide support to the finance business partnering team on good modelling techniques, processes and best practice.
  • Document the key financial models to help to reduce key person dependencies


Essential skills

  • Technical/Experience/Skills
  • Qualified CCAB/CIMA accountant or QBE
  • Excellent financial modelling skills using Excel to interrogate and interpret key data from financial models
  • Experience in using VBA, SQL, Tableau or Power BI would be advantageous
  • Hands on extensive experience in finance business partnering, budget preparation, data analysis, monitoring and forecasting
  • Experience in implementing change and improvements in finance teams
  • Excellent project management and organisational skills
  • Strong commercial skills and experience in supporting decision making.
  • Strong analytical and interpretative skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and confidence in dealing with a range of people at all levels


Desirable criteria

  • Public sector accounting and budgeting experience would be advantageous
  • Strong knowledge of efinancials or other similar accounting systems
