About the role

The primary aim of this role is to lead the automation of regular releases of data produced by a division, working closely with data management specialists and the analysts responsible for each topic. Automating these releases using Reproducible Analytical Pipeline (RAP) approaches is a key priority for the division so as to make best use of our resources and minimise risk. The post holder will be leading the development of pipelines to automate these publications, liaising with publication leads to gather requirements. They will coordinate the ongoing automation work conducted by data engineers in the data management team and ensure that RAP approaches are used consistently across the division. They will ensure that the pipelines are flexible and easy to maintain and update by analysts.

The post holder will also be expected to play a leading role in the development of programming skills across the division. They will be responsible for a range of activities aiming to improve programming skills and promoting coding best practices. For instance, they will be setting up a library of reusable functions, liaising with the organisations Statistical Methods Library. They will also be actively contributing to coding surgery sessions and set up a coding mentoring programme.

  • Lead the automation of routine publications, including weekly and monthly deaths, using their statistical expertise and experience of Reproducible Analytical Pipeline (RAP) approaches.
  • Coordinate requirements from publication leads, proactively engaging across the division and with key stakeholders to clarify requirements and priorities, and ensure high quality delivery that enables researchers and data analysts to understand, maintain and update the pipelines.
  • Manage staff directly and in informal projects to ensure the development of generic, well-documented functions that can be reused for other automation projects.
  • Be responsible for developing programming skills across the division, using their expert knowledge and coaching skills to mentor researchers and data analysts
  • Engage across the organisation to ensure that RAPs are consistent with GSS standards of good practice and initiatives such as the organisations Statistical Methods Library and the GSBPM, and supported by high quality documentation.

  • Strong experience of automating processes using Reproducible Analytical Pipeline (RAP) approaches.
  • Strong programming knowledge in high level analytical languages (such as Python, R, SQL etc) and experience of using version control tools (GitHub, GitLab).
  • Excellent training and coaching skills, and experience of developing others and building capability both within and beyond immediate team.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand customer needs, prioritise deliverables and workloads and manage resources efficiently within tight deadlines and constraints.
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects, delivering quality outcomes to deadline.
