Ocean Environment Specialist – Meteorological
Initial 6-month contract
Hybrid Role: 2 days in the office, 3 days WFH.
Inside IR35

  • To produce concise, accurate, clear, comprehensive, easily assimilated and up-to-date meteorological and climate information, principally within Sailing Directions and Routing Charts for the use of Mariners.
  • The post holder will also provide Meteorological and climatology information/data to other UKHO Teams e.g. Paper Production Group (PPG) and Defence
  • The post holder acts as the UKHO in-house meteorological expert.
  • Support product verification alongside OE colleagues

Responsibilities:

Capability: Liaise with the Met Office and other supplying authorities in the UK and abroad, by e-mail, letter, telephone and personal visits. Deliver Met and Oceanographic information to enable books to meet a production schedule ready in every respect for publication, reviewing publications for accuracy. Liaise when required with other teams within the UKHO. Take part in outreach activities to raise the profile of the team as a leading supplier of maritime Meteorological data and expertise.

Data analysis and presentation: The post holder will undertake analysis of data relevant to the teams tasking applying research of Met information from a broad band of sources and report back or add into products as required. Research and report inconsistencies in information received. Develop methods and presentation styles for the better presentation of climate information within the publications. Monitor publication rolling schedule and review data that requires updates, gathering new or updated raw data/information, analysing raw data gathered and validate, add value, and produce in usable format

Development: The job holder will develop a good understanding of the customers’ needs for and use of meteorological information. Provide teaching/advising/liaising with other editors where needed in order to develop/ review training. Design, develop, commission and operate computer programmes for the treatment of input data to meet changing demands

Report writing and Quality Assurance: The holder will be expected to maintain an archive of raw and processed data in paper (all digital) and computer format. Review navigation content for associated Met information. Manage contracts for supply of information the Met Office ensuring information is quality assessed. Manage the information supply programme for Met information. Ensure all working practices are documented and maintain for all work. #

Key Skills/Experience

  • Meteorological and technical skills supported by experience.
  • Ability to assimilate information in many forms and transform this information into a format easily absorbed by the customer.
