Talent Talk with Tracy Voice

In this instalment of our IWD Talent Talk series, we’ve spoken to Tracy Voice, Chief Digital Officer at Capital Coast District Health Board in Wellington who shares how she made her start in the tech industry and the importance of being your authentic self in leadership.


1. Tell us a little bit about how you started in the industry and how your role as Chief Digital Officer influences the direction of the business.

I’ve been in the industry for over 30 years.  I started back when the printing industry were the evangelists in technology. As technology evolved, I was fortunate to already understand programming languages which lead me on a pathway from database administrator to Chief Digital Officer. As for influencing the business – it’s all about listening, and delivering the right tools for the job, ultimately to make it easier for our workforces. Healthcare is changing, with more care delivered in the community – including the home – as well as hospitals. With an increasingly tech-literate population, we need to offer patients health options in our communities and user-friendly access to the information they need. 

To be able to adopt a different way of working, we must take our people on a journey. We must illustrate the benefits of technology – how it can reduce the burden of administrative work, freeing staff up to deliver care. Working alongside people who will be impacted is crucial, as is prototyping and working in an iterative way – improving our tools again and again.


2. What do you feel are the most important attributes of successful leaders today? 

The most important attributes of a successful leader are: the ability to listen, to lead with empathy, inspire others, be a visionary, and most importantly, be true to your authentic self.


3. How do you keep your team members motivated especially through times of uncertainty?  

For me it’s about mindset, remaining positive, outlining the pathway for your team to anchor, facilitating participation and being open to pivot and adapt based on feedback. Last year the whole organisation suddenly needed to find ways to work remotely, and many of those lessons have stuck with us.


4. Is there anything you wish someone had told you early on in your career journey? 

The difference between emergent v disruptive technologies and the true meaning of a hype cycle (maturity, adoption, and social application of specific technologies).  Today, to help get the best value from emerging technologies, I am focused on first raising our infrastructure and core platforms to a more sustainable level.


5. What are the qualities you look for in a future team member and why?

Depending on the role, I’m either looking for a specialist in their craft or a generalist who is able to inspire others while navigating the way points to a final destination.
